Using an innovative process, the women turn old newspapers into new and beautiful products by wrapping the paper into coils and forming them into spiraled building blocks. These building blocks are then joined together with thread and/or glue to make this bowl and lid. The pieces are then starched to make them firm and shiny. This bowl is ideal as a decorative piece, or for holding dry items such as candy.

These playful earrings capture the inventive spirit of KICK Trading, a new artisan group in Kisumu, Kenya, on the shoreline of Lake Victoria . Handcrafted using recycled soda cans and wire, the earrings make a fun fashion statement.

These earrings were made by artisans working with Noah’s Ark, a fair trade handicraft marketing organization in Moradabad, India. Most of the artisans are women, who benefit from the fact that they can work from home and thus maintain their responsibilities for their children and household.

The balaphone is constructed from eight rectangular wooden slats, arranged in an array from low to high notes. The slats are made from wood, and are carefully dried over a low flame to achieve their resonant tone. The artisan tunes each slat by shaving its underbelly. Two rows of calabashes provide natural amplifiers for the balaphone. These calabashes are fixed below the slats, also arranged from small to large. Finally the artisan etches designs on the wood.
